Bowl of β€˜Zole is Back

Pozole doesn’t have a season, but a steaming bowl of stewy pork and tender hominy, green from tomatillos or red from ancho chiles, sprinkled with crunchy radish or cabbage, crumbled queso fresco, a few slices of avocado, a spritz of limeβ€”doesn’t that sound especially good in February?

On February 24th, Jimmy Carbone of CiderFeast fame brings dozens of chefs and spirits producers back to Southie for another Bowl of β€˜Zole, a celebration of classic Mexican cuisine, tequila and mezcal.

It deserves a party in its honor: Pozole’s origins are ancient and fascinating (Check out this story on nixtamal) and its flavor (sweet, nutty, rich) and texture (fluffy but chewy) are unlike any other dish on Earth.

We’ve said it here before: Jimmy has a way of bringing all the top producers in a given niche together, and his events are FUN. Go to Bowl of ’Zole!

In the meantime, you can make your own bowl pretty easily, thanks to canned hominy, a seasonless godsend and perfect i midwinter.

This lovely tomatillo version from Edible Denver is very straightforward and has all the elements.

This version from Edible Nashville could not be simpler to make. It calls for store-bought pulled pork, or you make your own and get two distinct dinners out of it.

If it isn’t my best friend cabbageβ€”typically a toppingβ€”doing everybody’s job in this vegetarian Cabbage Posole and making it look easy, because cabbage does it all. I can’t wait to try it. From Edible Communities.

An easy, breezy, beautiful Tequila Smash would pair marvelously with any posole.

HIP HIP Hooray!

A win for HIP

February brought fantastic news for HIP, the program that provides dollar-for-dollar reimbursement when SNAP users buy local food directly from Massachusetts farmers. Governor Maura Healey’s administration has committed to fully funding HIP through the end of fiscal year 2024, and her 2025 budget proposal includes $25 million for the programβ€”the total amount MA Food System Collaborative estimates the program will need to run year-round and support continued growth in program usage. It’s a win for farmers and families, some bright local news in dark times. Onward to market season!
